HER ARGUMENT
Epiphanies, Theories, Confessions
This is not just another memoir.
This is a deconstruction of human life, as lived by a human.
This is not a how-to book. This is a what-if book. A what if you could look at life as an intellectual adventure game.
In a vein at once playful, philosophical and lyrical, artist Ellary Eddy builds a provocative case for the value of self-inquiry, authenticity, and radical astonishment at the marvel of existence. Using her own experiences as raw material, Eddy’s essays muse upon the nature of identity and explore the meaning of life in general. Her Argument coaxes you to throw off the shackles of everyday reality and, Tigger-like, bounce free, stripes rippling, into the frabjous wilderness of being.
The essays herein do not present an argument against anything but rather an argument for something, such as scientists and philosophers make – an argument in the sense of a ‘process of reasoning’ in support of a theory, in this case for a certain approach to life. Eddy romps through a wide range of topics: from Play, Style, and Soundtracks, to the Single Life, Synchronicity, and Dildos, from Art, Dating, and Motherhood, to Dogs, The Good Life, and Aging like a Motherfucker.

BUT WHO IS THE SHE HERE?
She has, or rather I have spent an inordinate amount of time here on earth trying to answer that question, to corral the diverse elements of my psyche, explore the contours of the self I inhabit at any given moment and, ideally, learn how to run with the particular body/mind continuum I’ve been given.
This has essentially boiled down to a daemon hunt. Not a snark – a daemon (or daimon) is an ancient Greek concept that encompasses, depending who you’re reading, one’s animating spirit, one’s soul, or one’s true character. An illusion, an hallucination, an idea… whatever it is, my daemon has continued to beckon to me, and given me no surcease from the chase. (Actually the damn thing still drags me out of bed in the morning and badgers me through til midnight….)
TO PLAY OR NOT TO PLAY, THAT IS THE QUESTION
Play, a given and a right, in fact an imperative for any child, somehow flies the coop as we become adults. The ability to enter a play state slowly atrophies until we are surprised to find we’ve become OLD BORES.
So I shall ask you not “How do you do?”
but “How do you Play?”
Or “How shall we Play?”
And at what game? A new game that no one has played before. Yes, let’s play!
Play! Because we can! On this tiny orb flying in oblong orbit in the middle of the Absolute Vast. Play is beauty at its most primal, most ecstatic, most marvelous. Play is our animal self at its purest. It is a great gift, for it confers Freedom. The freedom to invent, to imagine, to adopt different roles, wear masks, to cavort and to soar…
